I was involved into a large interdisciplinary project in University of Cantabria while making a Master degree in European construction. The project was focused on sustainable construction, the topic which nowadays is under deep investigation due to negative consequence of many human' activities. The project aimed to develop technological and management skills. The first part of the work was theoretical and the goal was to observe current world wide sustainability state, how and where it is applied, which types and technology are utilized. Main sustainable energies and their technologies have been studies out (solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, hydro, ocean, hydrogen energy), materials in all phases of its cycle life, building technologies, economic aspects were examined, some real examples in UK, Netherland, Spain, Germany, Norway were studied out.
The second part of the project was as an practical application of studied material and knowledge acquired to certain case, the Retirement Village, Walsgrave, Coventry, UK (99 dwellings in total). The point was to reach maximum possible levels of sustainability bearing in mind given constraints and limitation of the budget of developer:
Breafly speaking following items composed the core of a practical aplication project part:
- Energy (heating, ventilation, SAP)
- Water
- Material analysis: foundations, vertical parts, horizontal parts and roof
- Water wastes
- Surface water runoff: drainage, rainwater
- Polutions, emissions
- Health and wellbeing: daylighting, sound installation, private space, etc
- Life cycle costs
- Ecology
- Economic assesment - profitability study
